Flare's XML vs. regular HTML

Article #: GEN1003F Product: Flare Version: All

Summary:

What is the difference between XML and HTML?

Full Description:

XML also known as extensible markup language is for documents containing structured information. Structured information contains content such as words, pictures, etc. and gives an indication of what role the content plays. HTML also know as hypertext markup language is code that is used to design web pages with hypertext and other information that is displayed in a web browser. The limitation of the HTML is that the code is strictly used for the purpose of displaying the information and no indication of what the content is all about is given.

Flare's content is validated against the XHTML schema, which produces all the content as XHTML. XHTML is valid XML as long as the strict syntax rules for the structure are followed. All of the topic files of Flare still have the .htm extension, but the underlying code behind the topics are valid XHTML.
