Installing LAME MP3 Encoder on Windows Vista and Windows 7

The LAME MP3 codec must be installed when running Mimic on Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Full Description:

Because these versions of Windows cannot convert .wav files to .mp3 files without an external codec, one must be installed. We tested and recommend the free LAME MP3 codec.

 

Solution:

LAME can be downloaded from the Mimic product download page. Once it has been downloaded, follow the instructions below to install.

To install Lame Codec on Vista or Windows 7 32 bit:

  1. Close Mimic
  2. Unzip the LAME zip file
  3. Right-Click the LameACM.inf file
  4. Choose Install
  5. Open Mimic and compile Flash. WAV files should convert to MP3

To install Lame Codec on Vista 64 bit:

  1. Close Mimic
  2. Unzip the LAME zip file to a directory on the C:\ drive (ex c:\tempfolder)
  3. Open up the RUN command window (Windows key + R)
  4. Type CMD in the window. You will need to run CMD as an Administrator if Windows UAC is turned on.
  5. Hit Ctrl+Shift+Enter (to ensure the command window opens in Administrator mode)
  6. In the command window, type cd C:\Windows\SysWOW64
  7. At this path, type rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection defaultinstall 0 c:\tempfolder\LameACM.inf
  8. Codec should install. You may see a quick install dialog pop-up while the files are installed and copied to the directory
  9. Open Mimic and compile Flash. WAV files should convert to MP3.

To install Lame Codec on Windows 7 64 bit: 

  1. Close Mimic
  2. Unzip the LAME zip file to a directory on the C:\ drive (ex c:\tempfolder)
  3. Click the Windows key on the keyboard or click the Start button.
  4. Type CMD in the window (Search window). You will need to run CMD as an Administrator if Windows UAC is turned on.
  5. Hit Ctrl+Shift+Enter or right click on CMD.exe and choose "Run as Administrator (to ensure the command window opens in Administrator mode).
  6. In the command window, type cd C:\Windows\SysWOW64
  7. At this path, type rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection defaultinstall 0 c:\tempfolder\LameACM.inf
  8. Codec should install. You may see a quick install dialog pop-up while the files are installed and copied to the directory
  9. Open Mimic and compile Flash. WAV files should convert to MP3.

Note: If you have trouble installing the encoder, make sure none of the files are "Blocked". This can be checked by right clicking on the files and clicking on Properties. On the General tab > Security: click "Unblock".
